Study Shows Antibiotic Harms ALS Patients

A trial of the antibiotic minocycline against amyotrophic lateral sclerosis -- Lou Gehrig's disease -- has been halted because patients taking the drug had a significantly accelerated decline in neurological function.

The finding calls into question plans to try minocycline against other neurodegenerative diseases such as multiple sclerosis, said a report published online Nov. 1 in Lancet Neurology.

The study was led by the U.S. Western ALS Study Group.

"There were early indications in animal trials that it [minocycline] might be beneficial," said Robert P. Bowser, director of the University of Pittsburgh ALS research center.

But in a randomized trial that included 412 people with ALS, nerve function in those treated with minocycline deteriorated at a 25 percent faster rate than in those taking a placebo, the researchers reported.

Bradley buyout spurns founder

European drugmaker Nycomed yesterday said it plans to acquire Bradley Pharmaceuticals for $346 million and take it private, thwarting a similar bid by Bradley's founder.

News of the $20-a-share offer for the Fairfield-based specialty pharmaceutical company sent shares of Bradley up more than 22 percent by the close of regular trading. The deal represented a 25 percent premium to Bradley's closing price Monday, but was less than the $21.50 a share the company's chief executive, Daniel Glassman, offered in May.

Glassman founded the company in 1985, naming it after his son, who now works as a sales executive in the business. But Glassman's control of the company weakened last year, when a Boston hedge fund launched a proxy fight that led to a number of concessions, including changes in the composition of the board of directors.

Taking Care Of Your Skin Starts From Within

The old adage "you are what you eat" not only applies to our overall health and nutrition, but how our skin looks and feels as well. As the largest organ in the body, our skin can benefit from the same nutrition we get from foods that have a positive effect on our heart and other major organs. In fact, new research suggests that eating foods rich in protein and certain vitamins and minerals might provide valuable anti-aging effects.

Speaking at the American Academy of Dermatology's Skin Academy (Academy), dermatologist Susan C. Taylor, MD, FAAD, assistant clinical professor of dermatology at the College of Physicians and Surgeons at Columbia University in New York, N.Y., and clinical assistant professor of dermatology and associate faculty of the School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, Pa., discussed the importance of eating nutritious foods for optimal skin health and how foods can aggravate common medical skin conditions.

5 weird things about newborns

It's hard to believe now, but once upon a time, Michelle Duggar was a new mom. Now the Arkansas mother is famous for having 17 children, but she can still remember how her first child had a huge belly button when he was born 19 years ago.

"I was like, 'Something is wrong with my baby!' " says Duggar. "It was kind of a shock."

But Duggar's pediatrician explained that Joshua's bulging belly button was nothing to worry about. He told her it would probably go away by his second birthday, and indeed it did. That's why Duggar didn't panic when her fifth child, Jessa, was also born with what's technically called an "umbilical hernia." (Click to see an umbilical hernia)

Huge belly buttons, acne befitting an adolescent, and swollen breasts (on boys, too!) are just a few of the surprises that sometimes await parents.
