Skincare Confusion: Skin Care and Scalp Acne

Skincare-News.com discusses scalp folliculitis, a skin condition that can mimic acne by producing white heads and blemish-like bumps on the scalp and hairline.

Sacramento, CA (PRWEB) November 5, 2007 -- Although scalp folliculitis isn't technically acne, the symptoms and treatment are usually similar. Skincare-News.com's latest article, "FYI: Scalp Folliculitis" helps readers know what to look for when it comes to treating this pesky condition.

Mild forms can be treated with skincare products most people already own. Oftentimes, folliculitis may heal its own. On the other hand, severe cases of folliculitis are medical conditions that can lead to hardened, red bumps and this must be treated medically.

Excessive hair growth, part 2

HAIR GROWTH in excess that begins during menarche (onset of menstruation), and then increases slowly and steadily in the teens and twenties should be evaluated for possible polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). On the other hand, more severe musculinization such as frontal balding and clitoromegaly may imply substantial androgen excess and usually indicates a cause other than PCOS. Those with problems in menstruation should be more concerned for something more serious if there is greater disruption in their monthly periods.

Also, many patients with hirsutism are overweight. This worsens the underlying androgen excess and insulin resistance and makes treatment ineffective. In really severe overweight problems, additional skin problems like thickening and velvety skin discoloration may also appear.

Strictly for the boys

Rarely do I see a man at Washington University make an effort in what he wears for the purpose of impressing his buddies; most attempts to look done-up are designed to impress the ladies.

It would seem, then, that what a man wears at Wash. U. should be somewhat based on women's opinions. I approached some ladies of Wash. U. with an all-important question: "If you had to tell a guy to invest in a good ____, what would it be?" The answer was almost always a good pair of jeans or a nice pair of sneakers.

Therein is the basic foundation for a successful, urban campus wardrobe.

So how do you go about buying the perfect pair of jeans? As silly as it seems, you must understand denim to understand how the style would fit on your body. Men's jeans come in four types of fits: bootcut, straight-leg, relaxed and slim.

Skin Care Tips From The Top

When it comes to helping patients detect skin cancer, combat acne and acne scarring, treat hair loss and nail fungus, and find a customized daily skin care regimen to maintain healthy skin, dermatologists -- physicians with extensive training and experience in treating skin, hair and nail conditions -- are the specialists to whom millions of people of all ages turn for expert care. In addition, dermatologists can advise patients looking to improve aging skin on the most appropriate over-the-counter, medical and surgical options available to them.

Speaking today at the American Academy of Dermatology's (Academy) Skin Academy, dermatologist Arielle N.B. Kauvar, MD, FAAD, chair of the Academy's Council on Communications, discussed the breadth of expertise dermatologists provide and led an open discussion with fellow dermatologists on their top skin, hair and nail tips.

Intermission: Point and click tricks

Digital cameras revolutionized the way that we photograph the world. Where once we might have asked a stranger to take a photo of us, we now extend our arms and direct the lens at our face before opening the shutter. Once we hear the synthetic “click" of a closed shutter, we flip the camera around to view the photograph on the LCD screen to decide if another take is necessary. It's the digital self-portrait, and it is unavoidable on Facebook. It has become such a symbol for the way we share ourselves with the virtual world that it has been absorbed by marketers as a means of conveying modernity (for proof of this, look no further than the poster for “Marie Antoinette").
