| Mara Gordon | Apologizing for past wrongs
Back in 1964, a man named Edward Anthony's life changed forever. He was in jail at the time for dealing marijuana; only a 23-month sentence. While behind bars, Anthony enrolled in a clinical trial for a Penn dermatologist named Albert Kligman, a giant in his field who made millions developing the popular acne drug Retin-A. Anthony and fellow inmates enrolled in the trial to make a few extra bucks, to help ward off the sexual predators and drug dealers that roamed the halls at Holmesburg. Being in that study was the worst decision he ever made, Anthony told me this week. Penn doctors put him through tests that burned him and caused him unbearable pain. Anthony and most of his fellow inmates were functionally illiterate, unable to understand the informed-consent form that doctors hastily had him sign.

Anti-evolution ads ridiculous
I was on my way to get some acne cream from the local CVS, driving by a church, and saw one of the funniest/saddest Church billboards in a while. It said, If evolution were true, mothers would have three arms. Oh man! This must be the third time Ive had my life changed by anything on a billboard. The first time was the billboard that said, Dont make me come down there God. I thought this was pretty amazing seeing as how God recruited an angel to come down to Earth, bought the billboard space for a few months, and put in his two cents. I was a little confused when it was eventually replaced with a Hooters ad. But hey, the Big Guy knows what hes doing. This annoys and scares me because the people with such conviction probably have not read a scientific book since their Sunday school book Noahs Ark: A Guide to Modern Weather.

By Keeping Vitamin A Active Drug Slows Prostate Tumor Growth
A novel compound that blocks the breakdown of retinoic acid, derived from vitamin A, is a surprisingly effective and "promiscuous" agent in treating animal models of human prostate cancer, say investigators from the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB). Daily injections of the agent VN/14-1 resulted in up to a 50 percent decrease in tumor volume in mice implanted with human prostate cancer cells, reported Aakanksha Khandelwal, Ph.D., at the American Association for Cancer Research Centennial Conference on Translational Cancer Medicine. No further tumor growth was seen during the five-week study, Khandelwal reports. Importantly, VN/14-1 exerted its effects in multiple ways, which is the hallmark of a so-called promiscuous drug, according to the study's senior investigator, Vincent C.O.
Variety of dog shampoos available
THIS TIME OF YEAR as the holidays approach and many people have house guests, it's natural to want to clean up the dog as well. If you bathe your own pets at home, here are a few tips on special shampoos for dogs. For many dogs with greasy skin, look for a shampoo with benzoyl peroxide as the active ingredient. This is the same medication used in many acne medications, and it helps kill bacteria and dissolves grease the best. Shampoos containing these ingredients are OxyDex, Sulf-OxyDex, and Pyoben. For dogs with flaky skin (dandruff), look for a shampoo with sulfur and salicylic acid as active ingredients. These help to dissolve loose flakes off the surface of the skin. Be aware that, following a bath with these shampoos, some dogs may appear more flaky at first as a result of detaching dead flakes of skin that were soon to flake off anyway.
Large Trial Of Oral Antibiotic Minocycline Set To Begin In People At Risk For MS
Exciting news of the launch of a Canada-wide clinical trial of the oral acne medicine minocycline to delay the development of MS was clouded by a published report suggesting the drug was harmful in patients with ALS, a nerve disease also known as Lou Gehrig's disease. Although ALS impacts a different part of the central nervous system than multiple sclerosis, the investigators who did that trial caution that their results may have implications for other neurological diseases including MS. New Trial Begins: The MS Society of Canada announced the launch of a multicenter clinical trial of the common acne pill minocycline to determine whether it can reduce neurological disease activity in people who have had a first attack of MS symptoms and are at risk for progressing to definite MS.
Life Is Sweet With Honey
HONEY has been enjoyed by humans for more than 20,000 years, which isn't surprising given its health benefits, sweet flavour and a myriad of uses. Over the years people have worshipped with honey, got drunk on honey, healed wounds with honey and even made love with honey. Many even believed it to be the elixir of life, as new book Honey: A Handbook For Home, Health and Happiness, by Clova McQueen, shows us. So to celebrate the golden syrup made by bees here are some fascinating facts about honey and tips on how to use it. The honey from 3000-year-old honeycombs found in tombs of Egyptian pharaohs was edible. Honey consists of about 38 per cent fructose, 31 per cent glucose and one per cent sucrose, nine per cent other sugars, 17 per cent water and trace minerals.
Politicians trick-or-treat this Halloween (Thursday, November 01, 2007)
Remember when we decked our houses only for the Christmas season? Down the street is a home festooned in orange and black, and for a most chilling effect, I must admit, in my full-body cringe and creepy-crawly skin every time I drive by. How any voter can be so blindly loyal to the NDP is beyond me. Also, Halloween season is well upon us. During this season, kids take to the streets for their second most important holiday of the year, their costumes, both as traditional as the old-fashioned ghost in a snowsuit or classic witch in a parka and as contemporary as Spider Man wearing a toque or Little Mermaid in ski pants, a bunny hug and a fleeced-lined windbreaker just in case. Strange, isn't it, how Canada makes calendar concessions for other holidays, but not for Halloween? Our Thanksgiving is 46 days earlier than in the United States, historically recognizing that the bounty of harvest is that much earlier in northern climes.
